All The Best Eyelash Curlers You Can Buy In 2023 (Plus The Best Hacks For Using Them)

It's no secret that eyelash curlers are one of the most widely used beauty tools out there, particularly for those of us who have straight lashes that just won't play ball. They have deservedly earned a firm-favourite status in our makeup bags. Circle back to the very first time you used to sneakily scavenge through your mom's beauty drawer, only to stumble upon what looked like a tiny, palm-sized torture device. But as most of us would find out later down the line, despite their scary look, eyelash curlers are not at all painful once you get the hang of them (provided that you don't accidentally pinch your eyelid – been there, done that...).

As someone who hasn't been blessed with naturally curly eyelashes, I fully understand the frustration that comes from using a mascara that promises a wow-level curl effect and not getting the slightest hint of a lift. My stubbornly straight eyelashes have seen me try all sorts of application techniques and “innovative” wands, but even if I managed to get a little curl, my lashes usually dropped back to horizontal-straight within a few minutes (yep, how sad).

Don't get me wrong, I was very much aware of the existence of eyelash curlers the entire time, but admittedly, I was too scared to give them a go. I had all the same worries that go through every person's head who is yet to try this beauty tool: What if it causes irreversible damage? What if my eyelashes fall off entirely? But trust me, having used eyelash curlers for a while now, I can confirm that it's most definitely not as scary as you'd think. The most important thing to get right is how to use them properly. When used incorrectly, eyelash curlers can put unnecessary stress on our delicate lashes.

Little tip: if you want the curl to last all day long, secure it with a waterproof mascara (thank me later).13 best waterproof mascaras that are seriously budge-proofView Gallery

As a rule, you should never use eyelash curlers over the top of mascara – the wet formula will make your lashes much stickier and therefor more likely to get stuck to the curlers as you clamp down, then get tugged out when you try to lift the curlers away.

Over on TikTok, many creators have been sharing their favourite tips and tricks on how to maximise the volumizing potential of eyelash curlers while also minimising the risk of breakage. For example, one creator pointed out that it's a good idea to choose a pair of curlers that have a colourful buffer pad so your lashes don't blend in with the rubber strip.

"Not all eyelash curlers are the same," celebrity makeup artist Janine Holmes told her TikTok followers. “A regular eyelash curler usually has a bumper that's black, and the problem with that is that your eyelashes are dark and it's hard to see, so you might not get all your lashes in the curler.” For this reason, Janine recommends her “favourite eyelash curler from Kevyn Aucoin”, which features red silicone pads that allow her to “get in nice and close to the root of the lash.”

For gals with round eyes, TikTok user @autumrainn suggests checking out the Tweezerman Classic Eyelash Curler, drawing attention to how it helps her eyes look significantly more awake without using mascara. And if you're looking to give your lashes some extra lift, user @shannon.cannon shared her secret – a heated eyelash curler, much like this one from BeMyLady. The results are incredible and long-lasting – the only thing to be aware of is to make to give your lashes plenty of breaks in between styling as heating them too frequently can be damaging.

But even with the abundance of advice available on social media, finding a suitable eyelash curler can still prove to be tricky. To help you make the right decision, we've put together a full guide on all the best eyelash curlers on the market. We've narrowed it down to include options to suit every budget and preference while also taking into account varying eye shapes and lash lengths. Enjoy.
